Ingredients

8 oz. pizza dough

1/2 c. marinara sauce, (store bought or homemade) plus more for serving

4 oz. pepperoni slices

1 1/2 c. shredded mozzarella

4 oz. salami slices

1/4 c. freshly grated Parmesan

1 tbsp.  butter, melted

1/2 tsp. dried oregano

Preparation

Step 1Preheat oven to 425°. On a lightly floured surface, roll pizza dough into a 15”-x-12” rectangle. If your dough keeps stretching back, let it rest for 10 minutes before continuing to roll it out. Step 2Spread marinara over dough, leaving a 2” border around the edges. Layer pepperoni over marinara, then top with about half of the mozzarella. Top with salami slices, then the rest of the mozzarella. Sprinkle with half of the Parmesan. Step 3With the long end facing you, roll the dough tightly into a long spiral, folding the ends in as you go. Place the log seam-side down on a large baking sheet. Brush the log with melted butter and sprinkle with remaining Parmesan and oregano. Step 4Bake until deeply golden, 25 to 30 minutes. Let cool 10 minutes before slicing. Step 5Serve with warmed marinara for dipping.

What’s the difference between a stromboli and a calzone? Firstly, calzones originate from Naples, Italy, while strombolis are an Italian-American dish created in Philadelphia. The next biggest difference — the dough and its shape. While a calzone has a circle of dough folded in half and crimped over the filling, a stromboli uses a rectangular piece of dough that is rolled up lengthwise over your chosen filling.  Should I use store-bought or homemade pizza dough? If you’re looking to save time, use a store-bought pizza dough to make things extra easy. But, our homemade pizza dough is also so quick and simple to make, and will even make enough for two stromboli. Make two if you feel like sharing, or freeze the second half of the dough to have it handy for your next craving.  What toppings should I fill my stromboli with? We chose a classic filling of pepperoni, salami and various cheeses, but feel free to mix and match with your favorite types of cold cuts and cheeses as well! Add in some sliced provolone, prosciutto, spicy calabrese; if you love it on your pizza, try it in your stromboli.   Have you made this yet? Let us know how it went in the comments below!
