Ingredients

Ice

5 oz. Cocoa-Cola

2 oz. white or dark rum

1/2 oz. lime juice (optional)

Lime wedge, for serving

Preparation

Step 1 Fill a glass with ice, then add Coca-Cola and rum and stir to combine. Add lime juice if using and garnish with lime wedge.

If you’d like, add lime juice (which technically makes it a Cuba Libre cocktail) and get to sippin’! Best paired with a hot and cheesy Cuban Sandwich or Cuban-Stuffed Chicken. 😍 Though it’s unclear when the Cuba Libre was invented, it seems to have originated during the Spanish-American War at the end of the 19th Century and gotten its name around 1900 when Cuba won its independence from Spain. Traditionally, a Rum and Coke is made with light rum, but you can use whatever you like. A dark rum has a richer flavor profile. Making a Cuba Libre? Bonus points for seeking out a Cuban-made brand like Havana Club. While you’re at it, it’s worth seeking out Coke that’s made with pure cane sugar rather than high-fructose corn syrup. This is also a good time to break out big ice cubes, since they won’t dilute the drink too much.
